Republicans voted behind closed doors to nominate Tom Emmer for speaker of the House three weeks after Kevin McCarthy was ousted. Emmer dropped out hours later.
At some point, GOP leadership has to recognize that the MAGAs and the so-called RINOs are are so far apart that they’re unable to whip enough votes in their caucus for any candidate. If they can’t elect a speaker on their own, the responsible thing to do is to reach out to the Democrats and see what sort of terms they’d ask for in return for support in a speaker vote. It may be as simple as any bill with the sponsors from both major parties can get scheduled for a floor vote.
