I did notice, back when I used reddit, that whenever you sorted the world news subreddit by controversial, a huge part of that would be articles about negative things in India, which rarely appeared on the front page, but my assumption at the time was that it was just that India has a huge population and unlike, say, China, those people are actually allowed on Reddit, so it if some article upset some fraction of them it would naturally lead to a lot of downvotes.
