New York City Mayor Eric Adams on Tuesday said he will travel to Latin America to discourage people from seeking asylum in the city as it struggles to handle a massive influx of migrants that have overwhelmed its shelter system and strained financial resources.
The Democratic mayor is set to visit Mexico, Ecuador and Colombia during a four-day trip this week. The city has absorbed almost 120,000 migrants over the past year, with hundreds still arriving daily in need of housing and employment.
“We want to give an honest assessment of what we are experiencing here in this city,” said Adams. “We are at capacity.”
“We’re going to tell them that coming to New York doesn’t mean you’re going to stay in a five-star hotel. It doesn’t mean that, the mere fact that you come here, you automatically are going to be allowed to work,” he said.
I’m sure that’ll work. I may be overly cynical but this could also be a way for mayor Adams to brush up his foreign policy bona fides so he can run for higher office after his mayorship is done.
The latter point is probably correct, because it totally won't stop people from going and he has to know this.
Yea, hus speech kinda misses the point that these aren't immigrants seeking a better life. They're refugees fleeing violence. It doesn't matter if they land somewhere with little opportunity if it means they aren't under threat of death.
He will run as a lawyer for a former president?
IMO no reason a city mayor should be taking international trips like this. A complete waste of tax payers money.
"We" who? Him and Greg Abbott are just gonna bus them west like they've been doing already anyway
He should be careful. He can't actually negotiate with foreign governments due to the Logan Act. This looks like he's trying to go abroad to influence those governments.
