Venezuelans seeking asylum in the US who are already living in the country will be allowed to work legally under new rules announced by the Biden administration.
About 472,000 people will be eligible for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for a period of 18 months.
It follows calls by Democrats to expand work access for newly-arrived migrants.
US cities have been grappling with large numbers fleeing economic and political turmoil in Venezuela.
People must have been living in the US on or before 31 July to be eligible for temporary deportation relief and access to work permits under TPS. If granted, they will be allowed to work while they wait for an asylum determination to be made.
This is the least the US can do after fucking around with their country of origin.
Most of Venezuela's problems are due to utterly moronic economic and monetary policy in addition to cast corruption at the top. It's hard to emphasize how incredibly obvious their problems would be from the outset.
Perhaps so, but without the meddling of the US it's also possible that such governance could've been avoided. The kind of government a country ends up with is a result of many factors.
The overwhelming majority of their issues come from their monetary policy choices, such as printing too much, and their failure to invest oil profits when the prices were high into literally any sector other than oil. They failed to do so.
America is a convenient thing to blame but they aren't responsible for the current economy.
