Yeah, I’d be okay with that but this bill doesn’t even ban TikTok. It forces ByteDance to sell TikTok or face being banned. Our leadership is fine with out data being endlessly harvested by megacorps, but they don’t want China to run one of the megacorps doing it.

It’s kind of funny really, because even if China/ByteDance sells TikTok they could just switch from harvesting personal data directly with TikTok to buying all the data harvested from TikTok and other platforms just like the USA already does.

Instead of banning specific apps, ban the harvest and sale of personal data itself. Then the apps people want to use are still given a chance to exist if they stop mining data.

Yes but it’s splitting hairs… If you ban alcoholic drinks it’s basically the same as banning putting alcohol in drinks. Especially for a conversation between laymen on Lemmy

It’s more like we should ban the addition of unsafe additives to alcohol vs banning a specific brand of alcohol, even though most brands add it.

It’s weird how I the US every bill does like everything and I don’t think that’s good but also short form videos are absolute cancer and anything that reduced that is a good thing.

I hope Europe takes some inspiration from this and either forces all data harvesting companies be sold to a European owner or be banned.

Tiktok is cancer, so I’m okay with this.

Edit: I’m not sure why I can’t reply to the commenter that replied to my comment. So I’ll quote him and reply here:

Regardless of your opinion on TikTok, you shouldn’t be okay with the government targeting a specific app.

Would you feel the same if it were Grindr, under the guise of “protecting children?”

How about encrypted messaging apps because the government doesn’t like that they can’t read messages?

This whole thing is dangerously close to infringing on freedoms over ideology, rather than just being about foreign surveillance.

TikTok is an extreme example. If it were Grindr under the guise of “protecting the children,” I’d say it’s bullshit. But let’s not be naive here. TikTok is made and controlled by the Chinese government through a Chinese company. It’s an actual national security concern, so yes, I’m okay with what they’re going through right now. Deservedly so.

The bill neither shuts down TikTok, nor censors content on TikTok.

Why is it so important to you that it remain controlled by the Chinese Communist Party?

That’s a lie. If it was under the control of the CCP it would never be this profitable. Governments don’t want the responsibility of operating a tech company, they just want all the user data which tech companies happily comply with. The US has been among the worst in user privacy.

Governments are the bad guys here. The US could protect it’s citizens, instead they project their own tyranny onto China. Patriotism is making you blind.

Because otherwise it wouldn’t be permitted to show the truth about Israel’s genocide in Gaza

And yet clearly TikTok is the primary cause of the recent anti-Zionist views amongst America’s youth

This would not have occurred unless the app was controlled by China.

China couldn’t care less about Palestine or any other issue except to the extent it can be used against the US.

It doesn’t even make the top 10 in support to Palestine; from the numbers I can find, the US has donated about 100x what China has.

Correct. Which is why China needs to maintain control of Tiktok - they are incentivized to show the true horrors of Israel’s genocide and the brutality of Zionism

This is because China knows that doing so destroys the US’ moral clarity and credibility on the world stage. So no, it is not being done out of true sympathy for the Gazans. But without China’s involvement via TikTok, millions of young Americans would not even realize that a genocide was currently being funded by Biden and the United States. And for that, China deserves our thanks and deserves our support of their continued ownership of TikTok.

The alternative is that the United States would be uncritically permitted to finance the extermination of Gazans in accordance with the whitewashings of Israeli Hasbara. That is a much worse outcome than permitting China to continue owning Tiktok. We need to know the truth about our government and our supposed allies. If our government will not tell us the truth, then we need our enemies to do it for us. Which is a horrifically sad reflection of how far the United States has fallen

you hold a very hard line position, which begs the questions… Are those accusations true or are they amped up memes?

like, how can anyone who is paying any attention at all to US foreign relations not be aware of the US support for Israel and the ongoing Palestinian situation ?

It has been a known issue for decades, well before TikTok - not hidden or censored; openly discussed in media outlets formal and informal.

Gas stoves are actually a problem though, especially in NYC where most kitchens don’t have ventilation or exhaust

Sounds like it’s a ventilation problem in a city where 99.9% of the world doesn’t live.

Anyways, I didn’t say anything about gas stoves.
