What’s the conversion rate for lakh? They killed this guy because his dad couldn’t provide 10 lakh. If that’s like $20 WTF?
The story says they killed him after the dad tried to give them 3 lakh and they took 20k (!) instead and thought they’d be caught, but she says they killed him before any money was exchanged. What a waste.

Indian numbering is complicated. 10 lakh of something is one million of that thing. 1m INR is about 12k USD.
Basically a million in international counting system, I think.
The average annual income in India is apparently 2 lakhs, so 21 lakhs is definitely significant. After accounting for purchasing power parity, I’d reckon it “feels like” hundreds of thousands USD.
