RTS did go mainstream and it indeed turned into games very different from old school SC et al.

Plants vs zombies and LoL are the descendants of the genre and are or at least were, HUGE. Tower defense and moba are the two evolutionary paths that RTS took.

Tower defense is super mainstream, but moba, while huge isn’t really mainstream in my opinion. But one things for sure, they don’t have much in common with SC except the lineage.

There is no world where a 3rd party ticketing company should be able to own, or develop exclusive relationships with a venue operator.

The promoter, act, and venue operator should negotiate how tickets will be distributed when they draw up contracts. In this fucked up reality, the ticketing company owns the venues and controls all access to tickets and their distribution.

TM would still do tons of business in that world. They actually offer a compelling product to acts, venues and promoters, but they should always be in competition with the act and the venue box office.

TM and live-nation should be competitors but they have been allowed to form a vertically integrated monopoly. THIS is the actual shit the FTC was built to combat.

It’s the same thing the right does with government. It is a truism that there is all sorts of “inefficiencies” where the money is going to the wrong people for the wrong stuff.

In both cases, it’s sort of correct and sort of wrong. Corporations, governments, and any human institution beyond a certain scale (a few hundred people), will leak wealth into places it shouldn’t. It’s an unavoidable feature of our species as best I can tell.

It’s fine to accept it, it’s fine to be angry about it. It’s silly to blind yourself to it in some places and whinge about it in others.

I definitely did not claim it was braking privacy. As far as I can tell it was just querying an update server but for some reason it was doing it with such frequency (hundreds a minute for hours out of the day) that I deemed it was broken and that the OS was not managed well.

Other people took a more suspicious view but mostly they just lost my trust that they had any business running a system on my network. If you google around you can get more nuanced takes I don’t actually know if they ever fixed it.

HAOS is a managed operating system, which is perfect for people who want to automate their home but don’t want to manage a Linux machine. It’s a little wild to me to see a person in this community advocating a managed OS. Like, what are we even doing here??

I killed HAOS and set it up in docker because it was phoning home a lot. Sometimes there were hundreds of dns queries a minute to HA servers. No thanks.

It’s really an incredible data point. I am the king of the youth vote skeptics but, 2022 was a great year for young voters. I am cautiously optimistic that a generation of regular voters is coming of age. Most of what is wrong with our democracy can be helped greatly by broader engagement and participation. So much of the bullshit only works because nobody can be bothered to show up to vote for any office other than the president.

What cheating?? What state was not allowed to elect convention delegates? What delegates defected from their candidate on the first ballot? I know you want to believe that there is a big progressive majority that wanted to chose sanders but it isn’t true.

That is a version of history, but it is intensely colored by your preferences and less by reality. Primaries are decided by votes and while senator sanders assembled an impressive coalition, it could not be turned into votes. Don’t confuse “narratives” with votes. Narratives are for media and twitter denizens. The party decided at the ballot box. And the rules the dems use to allocate delegates are far friendlier to outsider candidate than the GOP’s.

It is completely fair to say that the tenor and narrative of 2016 and 2020 was sanders vs everybody. That is very accurate. But don’t be the sort of tinfoil hat simpleton who sees conspiracy and skullduggery in every event that doesn’t suit your preferences.

Look at the dem congressional caucus if you want to know where the party and its voters sit ideologically. The progressive caucus is bigger than it used to be but it is still a small minority of the overall party. You change that from the bottom up, not with big wild swings at the presidency.

Even barring 3rd party shenanigans leaving dems in control of the WH. Haley will leave when her term is done, trump will not. I’d much rather take my chances on a less than favorable Haley-Biden matchup than make a wild, all-in bet for the future of the republic.

There is nothing about Haley that appeals to me but I hope she manages to pull this off somehow. I will sleep better, that’s for damn sure.
