When you think about stereotypical programmers, you usually picture a white guy somewhere between 30 and 50 years of age (at least in Europe and I presume the USA). Coding used to be a profession that was predominantly made up of women but when it became clear that it would become an important job more and more men became interested in IT so that now there are about eight male programmers out of ten.

Black people have similar issues (and god forbid you are a black woman) in that they often are paid worse for the same jobs than white people and have worse chances to get good secondary education and academic jobs even if they have the same intelligence as white people. Helping people to get into computer sciences that statistically have way lower chances to do so without any fault of their own is a good thing in my opinion.

At the danger of sounding like a tankie, have you looked at politics subs on reddit ir even just the average headline when China does anything at all? I’ve regularly seen people advocating for nuclear strikes against chinese metropolises because “If the Chinese were against their government they would have already rebelled, so they are complicit in everything their leaders do” and the articles that go like “China Has Found A Cure To Cancer; But At what cost?” (slightly exaggerated but probably something we would see if a cure to cancer really was invented in China)

I only go on YouTube about once a month and I use it exclusively with either Newpipe or heavily modified on my PC. I mostly use it to watch trailers of games I am interested in, so I think that I would not be really affected.

The whole gamergate thing lends some credence to the words of the author I would think. A lot of the big gaming influencers are toxic, racist and misogynistic. Remember when people freaked out about some unflattering screenshots of female characters in a lot of games? Like Aloy in Horizon: Forbidden West, MJ in the new Spiderman game or even Abby in The Last of Us 2. There are surprisingly many people that don’t like any western games because they “push their woke agenda” or some such bullshit.

It is the same in many online games, although that has gotten a bit better over the years, where you get berated, insulted and catcalled if you dare to have a feminine voice.

I would say no to that because there is a big difference between refusing to work for someone that holds a discriminatory ideology and refusing to work for someone that is some category of human they hate especially if they can't actually do something about being in that category like with skin colour or being LGBTQ+.

You can't be tolerant of intolerance if you call yourself tolerant.

But our existence is not some kind of political opinion. If a wedding photographer won't take jobs from interracial couples because he thinks that they sully the white race or some shit it is not really different from the stuff this guy did. And my example would hopefully fall under any anti-discrimnation laws.
