Rep. Steve Scalise, of Louisiana, defeated Rep. Jim Jordan, of Ohio, for the Republican nomination to be House speaker and replace Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.
Scalise called himself "David Duke without the baggage." So there's that to look forward to…
He spoke at Duke's convention:
In 2002, Scalise was a speaker at a convention for the European-American Unity and Rights Organization (EURO), a group which was founded by David Duke. This became known in 2014 after political blogger Lamar White, Jr. uncovered anonymous comments from 2002 on Stormfront, a white supremacist website, which made reference to Scalise as a 2002 speaker at the convention. source
Yeah he definitely sounds like a big enough of a racist piece of shit to be popular with Republicans.
You can just say Nazi
Saying that is literally the baggage.
This was only a private GOP vote.
For the actual vote on the floor, some reps may still vote for Jordan, e.g. Boebert has said that she will vote for Jordan.
So there's still a chance that these fucktards can't rally enough votes to elect a speaker.
This whole "private vote first" relies on republicans keeping their word…
I would be incredibly surprised if the first actual vote they all voted together. There's gonna be at least one that immediately goes back on their word.
What's the record again?
15 rounds of voting I think
Those are rookie numbers!
No need for the ableist language
I understand your concern, but "Boebert" is someone's name in this case.
They clearly meant the "R" word. Republican.

Don't use the d-word on us please
lmao
I think you're going a bit overboard here.
The term "retarded" hasn't been used to describe those with special needs since probably the 80s. Maybe 90s. For better or worse, the word has long since devolved into a general-purpose insult.
Think of words like "dumb" and "idiot". Now remember that about a hundred or so years ago, these were also what were considered "proper" terms to describe those with special needs. They've long since devolved into general purpose insults. "Retarded" is in the same category.

Is there a case for bringing gay back as a word for happy?

Do we really need to be using ableist slurs like this? Cmon.
"Fucktard" is an ableist slur? Not sure I'm following. Oh, because it's similar to "retard?" So "fuckwad" is okay then?

It's not that I don't know, it's that I didn't consider it at all the same word anymore than I consider "pedophile" and "bibliophile" the same word. I don't see how "fucktard" disparages developmentally challenged people.

Plus “Fucktard” isn’t a word.
Honestly, that's my biggest issue. Wherever it came from, are developmentally challenged people really having an issue with it - consider it "ableist?" Not a rhetorical question, I'm completely ignorant here.

Yeah, it's a contraction of fucking+"retard". Any other variety of fuck+x is fine. Fuckwad, fuckstick, fuckhead are all fine.
Fuckweeb?
That'll never happen.
Yeah it’s not the same as just outright saying “retard” but it’s still ableist. Fuckwad is totally fine though, however you wanna cuss is fine just now ya know
Please go outside
I typed that while sitting on a park bench and enjoying the sunshine! When have you gone outside lately? Remember: don't insult disabled people by comparing them to evil people.
VR doesn't count
Man I wish I could afford VR, must be nice for you to have that so you don’t have to go outside :((

Weird random furry policing slurs 👍 Weird random furry reporting them and getting them banned 👎
Oh thank God! Only the white supremacist. We really dodged a bullet there!
Right. Now they got a competent person but it was.
Do you choose death or death? Decide.
What, we're out of cake again?
We only had the two bits.
We didn't expect such a rush!
knock me over with a feather that Santos’s endorsement of Jordan didn’t win the day
We really dodged a bullet there!
Nope, tempting as it is, I'm not gonna touch that one.
Seems like he got 113 votes. Votes needed for a simple majority was 111.
And he'll need 217 votes to win the Speakership position. Will some of the 111 vote for him when it's Scalise vs Jeffries? Sure, but if 8 Republicans vote against him, he won't succeed.
This isn't the official vote, this is the Republicans holding a private meeting before the official vote, and then saying that, as a party, when they hold the real vote they will all vote for Scalise as a bloc.
Only some of the Freedumb Caucus have said they won't go along. If enough don't, then we're back to eleventy billion votes again.

This is the best summary I could come up with:
“Today, I’ll be introducing an expulsion resolution to rid the People’s House of fraudster George Santos,” Rep. Anthony D’Esposito, R-N.Y., said in a post on the social media platform X.
Rep. Steve Womack, R-Ark., confirmed to reporters that he offered a motion to table or kill the proposed rules change that would raise the threshold needed by a speaker candidate to head to the floor.
In a closed-door meeting last night, Jordan proposed a novel plan to avert a government shutdown next month and pass spending bills if he becomes House speaker.
House Republicans will huddle behind closed doors today and vote to nominate a successor to McCarthy — but many remained pessimistic that the full chamber will quickly elect the winner.
Four of the former Ohio State University wrestlers who have accused Jordan of failing to protect them from a sexual predator when he was the team’s assistant coach in the 1980s and ‘90s said yesterday that he has no business being the next speaker of the House.
The wrestlers’ decisions to weigh in adds a new dimension to the speaker race, bringing in a controversial part of Jordan’s past that continues to hang over the Ohio Republican and staunch ally of former President Donald Trump.
