Yeah this shouldn’t be surprising at all. Democrats fall in love (or don’t vote), Republicans fall in line (and vote every time).

You can see the in-fighting here in the fediverse already. The hardcore leftists saying they “can’t support genocide” and getting mad at progressives for not being left enough. The right wing machine has been pushing the country to the right since 1970 and the “left” (what exists of it) was caught completely unaware and is only waking up now.

To be fair it’s possible a lot of that sentiment on here is astroturfing or people who are anti US trying to stir things up. If you check back in their content history they usually only post divisive stuff about the same few topics and reply agreement to other people doing the same thing.

Right! If Dwight Eisenhower were alive today the right would tar him as a radical liberal communist because of his policies. The only right wing policies today are hate, anger, fear and more hate. Seems our hard core leftists are caught up in the hate/fear cycle too.

And yet, for all you say, one doesn’t pull the overton window left by moving right to fill that gap

Biden has gone far enough right, that compared to even a decade ago, he’s now a conservative. that’s where centrist democrats are. They’ve happily filled the gap. Republicans aren’t conservative any more- that is to say, they’re not seeking to maintain the status quo. They’re regressives seeking to drag us backwards.

Okay, so instead of a fast plummet to fascism, you’re cool with the slow-slide into fascism as Biden fails to defend our voting and civil rights?

Virtually every civil-rights and voting-rights promises he’s made has either stalled or just been forgotten entirely. We are approaching the point where it’s - literally - do or die. you don’t win fights by staying defensive. You need to be offensive and make wins.

Biden is not doing that. Has not been able to do that, even with both the senate and the house nominally under democrat control- albeit with extremely tight margins

So, to you point, electing Biden is also standing around while fascists do their thing… Biden may not be playing the fiddle, but he’s not putting out the fires, either.

Umm, so you prefer the fast plummet into fascism? Yeah, I’m not cool with that.

You get to choose the lesser of two evils. And, no, refusing to choose isn’t an option; failure to vote for the lesser evil will benefit the worse one. So, unless you’re actually in favor of things going to hell as fast as possible, your entire argument is bunk.

The lesser of two evils is still evil, and in point of fact, the entire fucking reason we’re in this fucking mess.

We need something different, and that means not the guy who promised to not change anything.

You have no plan. If you have a realistic vision where not voting for Biden ends in something other than Trump getting elected, we’re all ears.

Otherwise, you’re just complaining that you don’t like the choice. Yeah, we know that already.

How has Biden gone right? He’s clearly farther left than Obama or Clinton. Even Bernie has said that Biden is a much more progressive president than he was a senator.

Can someone help me understand why the GOP is so fixated on Trump?

It seems they could side step the shitstorm and wipe the floor with biden simply by choosing a younger more palettable candidate.

Trump has an absurdly loyal base. And he’s spent the better part of a decade filling the party with his people, rewarding his friends, and trying to destroy anyone who he perceives as even slightly disloyal.

A lot of influential Republicans want to be rid of Trump. But over time, those who tried to pushback have either been driven out or were coerced into obedience.

We were so close to bring rid of him too. The second impeachment had a real chance of resulting in a conviction and barring Trump from office. But enough of them were afraid of Trump’s followers that they didn’t want to risk voting to convict. And they didn’t think he had a chance of making a comeback, so they took the excuse that they didn’t believe you could continue the impeachment process once the president leaves office, and used that as their political cover to vote no.

They could have cast his ass into the fire, but instead the courage of men failed and now we gotta do this shit all over again.

Those little snowflakes have consistently cowered in fear every time they have received death threats from their own base, when speaking against Trump in the slightest way.

The prominent voices from the Dems have been getting death threats and even real physical attacks and literal linch mobs, and barely bat an eye.

But the bitch ass Republicans slink away with their tail between their legs every time their own mob even glances in their direction.

Because he’s very vocal and very visible. While Trump takes all the ire and vitriol they can do all the fully heinous shit that actually makes a difference while very few people actually realize it.

He’s the rodeo clown of the republican party.

It’s the same reason why the Democrats are so fixated on Biden: they’re both proven to be politically effective. They can raise funds better than alternatives, which the GOP especially needs. They’ve both been presidents, so they have the credentials and experience to do the job. And they both have strong name recognition.

It’s a basically a national prisoner’s dilemma where we’ve chosen to rat on each other and made things worse than if one side had stfu or both had cooperated.

“Everybody senses that an endorsement only helps him now," Todd said. “They want to do it when they are adding value, as opposed to when it’s meaningless. After South Carolina it will be meaningless if he wins New Hampshire.”

They’re falling over each other to appear valuable up to Trump, specifically because it is valuable now - or, in other words, because this is the time when withholding their support hurts him the most.

These people are the worst traitors. They see American democracy limping and injured, and explicitly choose to knife it in the back rather than treat its injuries, hoping it will help endear them to its fascist bully that injured it in the first place. They should never be able to forget the shame of what they’re doing.

Trump’s life is like a police foot-chase scene through a restaurant kitchen or an alleyway in a movie, except instead of knocking over standing towers of kitchen pans and garbage cans to slow his pursuers down, Trump is throwing the bodies of Republicans down behind him.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Republicans are quickly falling in line behind former President Donald Trump’s bid for a return to the White House, signaling a growing consensus that his nomination is all but inevitable.

But the shifting ground can also be observed in the ranks of lawmakers and donors who are scrambling to put themselves on Trump’s good side before it’s too late.

Brad Todd, a Republican strategist who is not working for a presidential campaign, attributed the gusher of support for Trump to two key factors: the work Trump and his operation — including top aides Susie Wiles, Chris LaCivita and Brian Jack — have put into wooing endorsements, and a dawning realization that the former president is on the precipice of locking up his third straight nomination.

Stefanik adviser Alex DeGrasse confirmed the congresswoman’s efforts in a statement to NBC News, noting that she endorsed Trump before he officially launched his campaign in November 2022.

“It’s great to see the overwhelming support for President Trump across the House Republican Conference, which shows the strong momentum at this important time.”

One CEO who spoke to NBC News on the condition of anonymity to describe his thinking candidly said that he is laying the groundwork for a conversion from a rival’s fold to Trump’s team.

Loser Trump is the most hated politician in America. He was the first GOP president since 1888 to lose the white house after only 4 years.
