  • Today most Invidious instances are experiencing very harsh ip address rate limiting, it is becoming very very hard to watch yt videos through

AFAIK this is not what’s happening this time. YouTube slowly rolled out a change over the past 3 days that requires some sort of app verification for the android yt app. This is affecting Invidious since it emulates the yt android client to fetch video streams. This affects invidious instances hosted privately as well.

The maintainers are aware of this, and are working on ways to solve it. Tools like yt-dlp/newpipe still work because they have working implementations to fetch data by emulating web/iOS/etc clients.

  • I’ll never understand how Twitch became as big as a thing as it is.

You already answered that in your comment.

You want to watch videos, not livestreams. Of course a video will be better at being, you know, a video (nicely edited, in short format, etc). A livestream is different for many reasons, none of which interests you apparently.

Nothing wrong with that tbh. It’s just not for you.

  • There is spaceship battles, not sure about random locations, but I’m guessing you’d also need to fast travel to those.

Also the spaceship is VERY customizable, so much in fact that I found it overwhelming lmao. Not saying that’s bad thing, but you’d definitely need to come up with a lot of credits /loot first.

Again I only have 4 hours in game, so I don’t really know much yet.

  • Just played 4 hours. Not saying whether the game is good or bad, but I’m not seeing the point of the spaceship yet.

It’s looks like merely a medium for the fast traveling mechanic. You can’t really “move” in space (as far as ive tried), and can’t use it to fly within a planet.

I expected being able to manually travel from planet A to planet B and finding cool stuff along the way. If you wanna actually move you need to fast travel.

I also expected to be able to get in my ship and go from place A to place B within the same planet (also finding cool stuff along the way). It seems that also is just done by fast traveling only.

  • I’m not willing to try any Lemmy app that is locked to the latest iOS only (mlem, lemmios, now avelon).

I see it as a red flag that devs are just experimenting with the latest APIs and not committed to long term support & stability. What about when iOS 17 comes out? are these devs gonna require it because they want to test whatever shiny new thing Apple does?

Seems like a pain for users tbh when iOS is quite buggy on new releases, and alienates ppl who are jailbroken or have old devices. No stable software behaves like that, so these apps feel like an experiment that will soon be canned.

  • Didn’t bother reading their entire docs, but this all looks gamified as fuck. I knew this would happen, with these stupid points ingrained in every aspect of the site everything just became predatory and hostile unless you pay. It’s literally a game of “free2play” users grinding whatever is needed to get points (which probably is not feasible) vs buying the “special subscriptions”.

Then the introduction is laughable, I want to peek into the brains of these mfers who not even weeks ago were taking subreddits from mods by force, and now preach of community independence from platforms.

  • I do remember seeing this popup way before the whole API & protests debacle. The warning doesn’t even make sense, how will switching to the app to see the same content be safer?

I figured you needed to login (to apply your block list, filters, NSFW prefs, etc), but merely seeing the desktop mode of the website lets you through (not even using old.reddit). So this is another cheap way of forcing you to their cancer app.

Now you can’t even SORT comments without using the app. They are really taking all pqges off Elon’s book on ruining a website.
