  • Huh? When are you guys celebrating Halloween? The only Friday 13ths in 2024 are in September and December.

Also I thought the calendar cycles every 400 years. So if Fri 13th Oct 2024 exists, which it doesn’t, then Fri 13th Oct 1624 and 2424 also, er, don’t exist.

♫ In the year 2424, if trolls are still alive… ♫

  • Lower performance though. At each iteration through the string you need to compare the length with a counter, which if you want strings longer than 255 characters will have to be multibyte. With NTS you don’t need the counter or the multibyte comparison, strings can be indefinitely long, and you only need to check if the byte you just looked at is zero, which most CPUs do for free so you just use a branch-if-[not-]zero instruction.

The terminating null also gives you a fairly obvious visual clue where the end of the string is when you’re debugging with a memory dump. Can you tell where the end of this string is: “ABCDEFGH”? What about now: “ABCD\0EFGH”?

  • A support band for Madness. To call them crap would be an insult to all the genuinely crap bands out there. They went through crap and came out the other side. Then they went through whatever level of shitness that was and came out the other side. I don’t think anyone applauded them, except when they stopped making whatever ungodly racket they were making and went offstage. I’ve never been more relieved to hear a bunch of unmusical talent-free potty-mouthed morons finally STFU.

  • Your rights as an adult are that you now get to make your own rules and everyone else has to respect them. But the flipside of that is that you also have to respect everyone else’s rules, especially those of a homeowner.

That homeowner might have rules about whether or not you can wear shoes inside, or whether you can smoke inside, etc. When you own your own place you get to make rules like this yourself, and you will be within your rights to expect your visitors, tenants and offspring to abide by them.

If for example you make a rule that says “Don’t tell strangers my address” then you would be right to expect your children to abide by that rule.

This is your mom’s rule and you have to abide by it. Tell your dates to pick you up and drop you off somewhere nearby without giving away your home address, and when you want to invite them home you need your mom’s agreement first, because it’s her house and her rules.

BTW the “I want it my way!” attitude is that of a kid not an adult. Grown-ups make agreements and stick to them. If you want different rules you can try to negotiate with her, but you have to accept if she won’t change them. There are good reasons for not letting unknown people know your address.

  • My favourite kind of updates are those that happen on a Friday afternoon where you push all the buttons you think you have to, and it looks like it’s getting on with it, so you switch the monitor off and go home for the weekend, then when you come back in on Monday there’s another popup that says “you have to push this button for no reason before I’ll install these updates” and then you have to sit there watching it update because it’s sat there for the entire fucking weekend waiting for you to push that stupid pointless button.

I wish there was a checkbox that says “Complete updates without requiring any further user input. Wanna reboot? Reboot. Wanna download some shit? Download some shit. Wanna start installing some shit? Install some shit. Wanna repeat over and over? Repeat over and over” or something like that.

  • I think it’s fair enough. If they accept your spam then they have to accept everyone else’s spam too. No it doesn’t make any difference that your stuff is free. Reddit subs are usually for discussion not marketing; there are channels to spunk your adverts down and you should use those instead of trying to insert them into discussions. No it doesn’t make any difference that your free stuff means you don’t have a marketing budget. We all know today’s free stuff is tomorrow’s subscription stuff, and yeah I can already see you’re about to scream at me that you don’t ever intend for that to happen. But the simple fact is if your stuff takes off then you’re going to have to make more time for it but free stuff isn’t going to pay your bills and you’re going to have to start raising cash one way or another.

What you should be doing is to continue being a positive contributor, and put your promo stuff on your “about me” page. Anyone who is interested enough in you will look at your profile, see your stuff and maybe then consider engaging with your products.

Forget the 10% ratio, remember the rule NO MARKETING, and then everyone will be your friend again. The 10% rule is not intended to say “you can spam this much and no more”, it’s to allow people to talk about actual products they like (that others have made) and point to them without those pointers being misconstrued as promotion.

“…votes…” No, the rules are for preventing spam, the voting is to highlight high quality posts over the low quality stuff.

“…billionaires…” What an odd strawman. Business of all sizes from freebie shops like yours up to Microsoft are NOT ALLOWED TO SPAM chatrooms. You’re likely to see more stuff about billionaire businesses simply because they’re bigger, not because they have some privilege you don’t.

I mean come on, there are enough fucking adverts everywhere without discussion groups being full of that shite too. Advertise in advert channels. Chat in chat channels. Don’t mix the two. Of course you’re proud of the stuff you’ve made and that’s a good thing, but there is a time and a place for promoting it and that place is NOT a discussion group.

  • That’s actually quite an interesting approach and I wonder what the limits of implications are.

Could we for example imply that Bo and Luke are not only shagging Daisy and each other, but in addition have raped and/or murdered numerous other people? Could we imply they’ve lynched anyone? If we can, what else could we infer? If not, why not? What limit did we exceed?

Or could we go the other way and imply that they do lots of anti-racism stuff offscreen and that they’re using Confederate symbology and names not to glorify it but to mock it? And that they are therefore non-racist and (with additional implications) non-incestuous?

Since one aspect of racism is ascribing negative traits to a particular people group regardless of any evidence that those traits are true (like for example the English thinking of Irish people as stupid, although for the most part I don’t think we do that any more), could ascribing incest and racism to citizens of southern states in itself be racist?
