  • The silver lining here is that because the Republican supreme Court so vastly overplayed their hand here, they might inadvertantly have saved the nation from a fascist takeover.

    Hear me out:

Joe Biden was previously doomed to be a 1-term president. The last election was an anti-Trump referendum, and it was a squeaker! Very little abundant base was actually excited be voting for Biden.

Heading into the next election we were ALWAYS going to have a mediocre Biden presidency, where none of our major crisis was solved, because Biden never aimed that high to begin with. It was never going to be enough to excite the base on the left.

And worse, with Republicans controlling the House, the second half of Biden's term was doomed to be a do-little presidency. Going into the election we were going to be asked to vote for a man who hadn't done much for the last two years, and who never even talked a good game about the radical change we need (universal healthcare, universal basic income, removing ALL student debt, etc).

Trump being back in the ballot helps a bit, but I'm not sure people are still feeling the immediacy and the urgency to keep him out of the oval office as they did at the end of this last term.

It was going to be another squeaker, and my money was on the Republicans because of their ability to ratfuck the vote with gerrymandering and voter suppression.

But NOW we have the supreme Court lighting a fire under the left. They struck down roe, and they struck down student loan forgiveness.

That may be enough to put us over the edge.

  • Going to an anti-Israel rally is being anti-Jewish in the same way that cops who do stop and frisks are being racist.

There may be no hate in your heart, but your selective targeting of one group over another is playing into a bigoted system.

Like, I'm sure the anti-Israel protesters are just as outraged about North Korea, China, all the Arab countries that are oppressing women, killing homosexuals, and are so anti-Jewish that they've killed off or exiled their entire Jewish population.

… But they only ever get around to protesting Israel.

  • Biden is definitely doing much better than I expected. No question. Nowhere near the Bernie Sanders type that we need, but a pleasant surprise.

In another time, I probably would go on a rant about Boomer politics killing us slowly. But since Republicans have literally become fascist lunatics, Democrats have to stick together no matter what.

History has shown us just how bad things can get under fascism, and these Republicans are dangerous, stupid, and cruel, and stupid. And yes, I know I put stupid twice.

  • I fully agree with your assessment of the basic partisan realities, but the ACA is the perfect example of the problem.

Democrats aim low, and compromise even lower.

The ACA was sold to us as a stepping stone. Democrats told us not to worry that it didn't go far enough, because we would build on it.

What ACTUALLY happened was that passing it was like releasing a pressure valve, which took away all momentum for fixing the healthcare crisis.

Not only did they fail to expand it, they spent the next decade watching it get chipped away and chipped away.

15 YEARS LATER and we are STILL in a full-blown healthcare CRISIS.

So sure, the Republicans are evil fascists that will destroy the country, and must be defeated at all costs. But Democrats are embarrassingly incompetent, and I am so fucking tired of watching them tout their insufficient, mediocre accomplishments as if it's something to be proud of.

  • We have a lot of nightmare scenarios in the future: Trump wins, Trump loses and we get insurrection part II, Biden wins and we don't take the house and keep the Senate, and we have at least 2 more years of gridlock while our lives continue to get shittier, etc etc.

The true tragedy is that there isn't even a good outcome in the mix. Biden wins and Democrats take Congress. Fine, will they fix the courts? Fix student loans? Will they even try for universal healthcare? Universal Basic Income? Anything even close to meeting the moment?

    So depressing.

Anyway, vote Biden so at least we don't wind up in a fascist dictatorship.
