  • I think kinesis nicked the design?

Idk which is older but didn’t they both blatantly copy the Ergodox layout?

I have commuted with an Ergodox and I honestly just find it a bit too large. If you are set on that many keys I’d suggest you check out SliceMK since they made a low profile Ergodox. I’m not a fan of ZSA since they are overpriced (cheap plastic) and haven’t really ever done anything innovative IMO. Although I don’t use it often my SliceMK wireless Ergodox is really solid.

    • I was a 60% guy until I borrowed (stole? I still have it) a Kensis Advantage from a coworker.
    • Not long after I built a couple Ergodox (Hotdox). I used all 76 keys for about 5 years.
    • I built a beautiful wireless Ergodox with a metal case and solar charging (SliceMK) that I have basically never used :/
    • For the last year and a half I’ve used a dactyl manuform (Wylder) that I soldered with ameba king per key pcbs. 39 keys (I don’t use a few) + a trackball.

I don’t see myself changing anytime soon, auto mouse layer is amazing. I have a Draculad PCB and case but no real reason to build it since I wfh.

  • My beginner ergo keyboard was the original Hotdox. I bought 2 (one for work and one for home), used them for years. Cheap. Reliable. QMk. No regrets.

I regret buying/building my really nice metal Wireless Ergodox because I simply don’t use it. The idea was it would be convenient for returning to the office now that nobody has a permanent desk anymore. However I’m still wfh and now using a dactyl manuform with a built-in trackball and half as many keys (so I can’t go back lol).

AFAIK orientation does not matter as long as it is consistent across the entire board. Double check with the PCB designer/manufacturer.

Edit: Why exactly am I being downvoted? What I said is correct. Hope it helps somebody as adding one line to the firmware is trivial, especially as compared to re-soldering.

  • Apologies, I have obviously offended you and that was not my intention. Everyone has bad habits and I didn't think pointing one out would be hurtful. My intention was only to help.

I never said you were dumb. Frankly, I am impressed with how aware you are of your finger movements. I didn't realize I sometimes tapped T with my right hand and Y with my left hand until I switched to a split keyboard.

Only using your left hand to type T and only using your right hand to type Y would be considered good/correct form.
