I am in academia, and I hate how everyone in my field interacts there. Even my supervisor posts relatively important news there (new papers published or conferences etc).

The effect is not clear cut, and there are many other confounding effects that might be more important, and being glued to your phone might be a symptom more than a cause, but I agree that excessive social media and short format videos are bad for you, but that can be said about video games or even regular games.

I use both. Sadly, I have lots of software that doesn’t work (or works pretty bad) on Linux. I love Linux, but there’s no denying it can be frustrated, specially if your hardware doesn’t support it, and that applies to too many people who has no saying in the hardware they use.

For the life of me, I tried every single pdf reader on Linux, none gets close to Adobe reader, in terms of compatibility, tools and nice UI. Every time I found the perfect one on Linux, days later I realised my collaborators couldn’t see my highlights (or something of the sorts).

In my school uniform included shoes (or at least they had to be of a certain colour). True, you will know who is rich anyway, but the point of the uniform was not to hide who was wealthy, but instead level all clothes and avoid flashing.

Personally, although I think uniforms don’t serve their purpose, and kids are better off wearing whatever they want, I loved that I didn’t have to think about what to wear when going to school.
