Comparing lemmy to 4chan is completely disingenuous. It has virtually no moderation by design. That’s what its whole reputation is staked on.

Discord is also a different kind of platform. You can’t read into servers you aren’t a part of, or participate in them. The dynamics there are very different, and most servers are invite only.

To me one of reddits main problems is their moderators and how overzealous they can be. I am relieved to see lemmy doesn’t give mods or site admins as much power over others, even if that causes problems from time to time. Someone else might see it differently though.

That’s not at all what I am saying. I am saying it’s easier to do moderation on more centralised platforms like Reddit, because moderators simply have more power and more tools there. The flip side of that being that it makes it easier for moderators and admins to abuse and ban people without recourse. I am not saying moderation is pointless at all, just that it’s easier with one platform than the other. There are pros and cons to both models.

I would argue being open source and decentralised are major advantages of Lemmy and are more than sufficient to justify its existence. Just that it also isn’t perfect either. There are always trade-offs to be made when designing a platform, and that’s something you should always bear in mind.

Also you use Lemmy, which requires scripting. Pretty much every online game, shopping website, calculator, and so on require scripting of some kind. Scripting isn’t just for bad things like tracking. It makes a lot of cool stuff possible, that you doubtlessly use everyday. As a plus it’s generally more secure to use a web app than have a myriad of different programs or applets replace all these different things, as websites are sandboxed. There is a reason JavaScript replaced Flash and Java applets.

There are sometimes things upstream causing problems. The Linux kernel itself isn’t one of them though as Linus is pretty adamant that Linux distributions should be easy to setup and use. KDE is also designed to be pretty friendly while being customizable still. The main issues seem to come from apps and distributions.

I mean yes, how exactly would you want the web to work? In order for it to be secure we need website code to run in an isolated environment. Modern web browsers have gotten pretty good at this.

Though we say it’s a JavaScript Virtual Machine it’s not the kind of virtual machine you are thinking of. It just means it’s being interpreted in a certain environment rather than compiles code running natively. It’s not like a whole OS. Running a web browser in a Virtual Machine is unironically a method to improve security; checkout Qubes OS for an example.

Also the permissions it’s asking for aren’t that serious. Basically GPU access and download folder access.

Systems don’t normally enter hibernate automatically unless they are at low battery. There is something called modern standby or s0 sleep, versus traditional s3 sleep. The “third state” you describe sounds very much like s3 sleep. I doubt it would switch between s0 and s3 sleep though, normally one or the other is enabled. Maybe it’s going to hybrid suspend? In fact that would probably explain it. I believe hybrid suspend involves using s3 sleep state.

Also there are no power relays in modern ATX PSUs to my knowledge, you are describing something else. They use transistors to do all of the switching I believe, aside from the physical switch on the back which also isn’t a power relay.

It doesn’t actually have less spices as such, it has less chilli and more cream so that it’s less hot. Korma which is legitimately Persian and from the indian subcontinent is more mild than Chicken Tikka Masala. Likewise Makhani and Hydrabaddi are Indian dishes with a comparable amount of cream and hotness. Don’t get me wrong, it’s definitely not a hot curry, but it’s not weaker than some of the things coming from India or Pakistan.
