I read a cool short story a few years ago that really embraced that quote. It started out as a fantasy story with wizards doing magic. It then turns out that magic is actually old nano machines or something, but society has forgotten all about the science behind them.

You should always run a full upgrade when installing a new package to make sure your versions are all in sync. Like if your new package is looking for version 1.1 and you have 1.0 installed, the new package won’t work. In general, everything should be installed with ‘pacman -Syu’ not just ‘pacman -S’

If you don’t install any new packages, then no you don’t need to upgrade anything. You’re just missing out on security patches and upgraded features. It’s worth running occasional upgrades.

I was just in Japan a couple weeks ago. Kyoto was incredibly crowded at the tourist spots, but it was the peak of cherry blossoms so I expected it to be crowded. I didn’t meet a single unfriendly person while we were there, it’s definitely worth it.

You are describing a put option, a contract to sell the stock at the end date for whatever price is in the contract. The opposite is a call option, a contract to buy the stock at the set price.

Shorting and puts are a bit different. To short a stock, you borrow the shares and sell them today, then need to give back shares at a later date to the person you borrowed them from.
