Headlined as “a history of getting things wrong”, the host goes into deep dives about what we thought we knew, how we eventually came to figure out we were wrong, the repercussions of both.

It takes a seriously funny and well researched approach to a number of major events in our history, and I absolutely must recommend “the foolkiller” a five episode exploration of a submarine found at the bottom of the Chicago River then lost to history, with a very juicy footnote delivered several episodes later, that I dare not spoil for you.

If it were a ban on the rare earth minerals themselves, yes, but a ban on the extraction technologies just secures dependence on Chinese sources.

The reason China is a major exporter of these minerals has less to do with their availability in China and more to do with their lax environmental regulations, which allow extraction via means that are prohibited in many other countries.

So preventing their extraction in countries where stricter environmental standards are in place just means more environmental damage.

I reckon if you could get there 10 years early you could probably prevent the entire thing. If you were capable of convincing some of the larger groups within the americas of the impending invasion, there were certainly people and resources enough to put together a small navy and start patrolling the eastern coast. Throw is some modern knowledge of firearms and metallurgy to help them develop some cannon, and Columbus never makes it to America.

Back in Europe people assume him lost at sea, and leave the atlantic untouched for another generation. With that much time to prepare, who knows how things play out.

Syncthing generally works pretty well, but every now and again it decides that it’s out of sync for no reason requiring a purge and rebuild of my shared dirs.

Still an order of magnitude more useful than synology drive which I upgraded from though.

About a year back I stumbled across these cool products that are a heatshrink sheath with a metal ring coated in low temp solder inside. They made all of my wire joining a million times easier. Just strip the end of two wires, push them into the sheath and blast them with a heat gun for 20 seconds until the ring contracts into a crimp and the solder flows onto the wires. Better physical and electrical connection than a crimp, with none of the futzing that comes with soldering and sheathing.

Lol, white dust is what a dry powder extinguisher is meant to spit out. Ths issue is that if the powder becomes too compacted, it won't come out. Look up a video of a dry powder extinguisher in use to see if it's working like it should.

However, they are more-or-less single use. If you've used it, even partially, you should really get it recharged or replaced.

I had two jetsons that i was using for a project, had one on my desk and one in another office. This seems somewhat flawed. Lets say you have 90 songs by Vengaboys, and 10 songs by Slayer in your playlist. In order to play every song without playing Vengaboys back to back, you'd need to play Slayer 4x more often than you play Vengaboys.

Maybe it's becuase i grew up on python and bash still seems somewhat alien to me, but any time I'm crafting something with more than three or so nested functions, I use python as a wrapper for bash. Python initiates a bash script, parses the retval, inititates the next bash script from that data, etc.

I support this approach. Any company manufacturing products which are not readily biodegradable must put in place a scheme to capture and render that product inert before they're allowed to sell it.

New type of plastic that can't be recycled? Better figure out a recycling process and sort out the logistics of implementing that process wherever you intend to sell it.

I feel like the rent crisis is not something that can be resolved by taxes alone. What is needed is a blanket ban on private rentals.

Got an extra house that you're not living in for some reason? If you want to rent it, then you hand over control to the ministry of housing. No more discrimination against renters, no more invasion of renters privacy, and no more extorsionate rents.

Don't want the government renting it out to 'undesirables' or think they arent paying you enough rent? Quit hoarding and sell it.

All cad files have a defined structure which could be interpreted. Unfortunately many cad files are proprietary and decoding them externally to the closed-source programs that create them is a massive undertaking that would get you sued
