Huh I recently watched a video about how SpaceX basically squandered the renewed interest in the moon (EDIT: It was actually a remix of a Smarter Every Day video, about how they need dozens of launches for a single flight to the moon). Arguably the creator Thunderf00t is a very biased shitposter, but their plan seemed absurd and included blatant corruption. Imho SpaceX has done some good stuff but it’s a pretty mixed bag.

Do you know a youtube channel that is smart about reporting about spaceflight without overt fanboy biases?

All this reads weird. Private spacecraft sucks, recent Boing corporate culture sucks, SpaceX sucks even more. But this is Boings first flight and it seems it’s a relatively minor problem so I’m curious why there is so much backlash. I guess it’s a mixture between general anger at Boing for mismanaging their expertise, fatigue about private aeronautics and maybe spaceX fanboys?

Dunno. I’d imagine astronauts would kill for more time in space, part of this seems manufactured drama.

Yeah we should have, after promising Russia not to expand Nato “one inch to the east”, almost IMMEDIATELY expanded Nato to the east. And then within 14 years be at their border. The US helped Saudi Arabia bomb the shit out of Yemen for a long time (search). I’m not properly educated about this myself but there are war crimes, starvation, a lot of shit. I mean you can’t keep up. But to them, enforcing sanctions against Israel creates local support, otherwise they are a pretty bad Islamist regime. The Houthis are also not proxys of Iran. So US bombing them probably helps them too internally.

I think people are going a bit overboard with the reddit hate. I used the site for over a decades, learned a lot and had a lot of laughts and fun and gripes. My explanation would be that the GOP was moving towards fascism for decades (dogwhistles etc.). Worsening of material conditions (effective QOL), propaganda or “talking points” on news and social media that became more and more detached from reality, fearmongering (wars, terrorism, islam, socialists, corruption, climate change) paved the way for him. Normally the political system also heavily filters who gets to rise to power. He managed as an outsider because he was known.

I imagine that theoretically you could have algorithms or machine learning to calibrate this. Like make test sounds so you see how the sound diffuses and then filter it out.

The US is indeed in a very good position, having only two borders and two oceans between everyone else. They just need to get Mexico to mine their southern border, while they mine theirs.

But Europe, Russia, China, India have plenty of them and won’t be able to escape refuge streams or conflicts. Large parts of India might become uninhabitable. Food prices are going to fluctuate. Global trade will become unstable or collapse, disabling the complex globalized industrial economy. Nuclear war is very likely. People still don’t know what’s coming.

Thanks! That is really my only impression, Arthur, even though an expert in Muggles, sees only amusement value in muggle tech. That’s why I’d think there isn’t really any significant trade possible. Wizards can just create anything with magic. Except maybe land. So the exchange rate would drop if you’d try to trade significantly more. Just my speculation of course :)

Thanks for the info, I didn’t know they still are clinging on. Afaik they started with sanctions against Israel bound ships, then got attacked and now attack any US or UK ships. No doubt further escalations are coming instead of a ceasefire.
