Crap, every day I see signs of how AI is polluting reality, when it could and should only be used to improve humanity.

Also, I’m starting to believe AI is effectively going to destroy or resize several jobs. For example, a friend of mine told me it asked ChatGPT to write several lines of code and it did so, maybe 85% correctly. He went through the whole code and could find mistakes and correct them. Anyhow, long story short, it would have taken his a lot of time to write them himself.

I want to slightly hijack your comment to say how innovative lots of these services were when they showed up and how they all ultimately managed to become a corporate machine crapping on both customers and intermediaries.

I mean that, when they arrived, Uber, AirBnB, Glovo/Deliveroo/Just Eat/DoorDash all brought something new and potentially useful and parallel to existing structures (involving regular people on the ground which, theoretically, can make an extra buck), but then… They all went down the toilet (I suppose since they were all losing money at the beginning to establish themselves, they had to find some way to make money, but they all irreparably chose enshittifcation)

Fascinating read about a horrible tragedy by a complete idiot. I also learned such a way of scamming is called pig butchering.

I’m not making fun of scammed people and feel for them, but I’m stunned how person X from NYC could believe that person Y from Hong Kong would want to marry them by never having met them. I mean, I can’t understand why you’d trust someone who you’ve never met and only been chatting to.

For example, if a real friend of yours had been a victim of email spoofing and the scammer started trading emails as your friend, then you’d be interacting with a “trusted” party and I can see it would be easier to fall for it, but these are random numbers from a country you’ve never visited (which no one can even certify even is the one they claim to be) and you start trusting them for no good reason.

There are tons and tons of scams, some much more subtle and/or targeted than others, but this stuns me in how generic and random it is (and how successfully it works)

While I fully agree with you, for a second there I wondered what could have been proper clothing and footwear for this type of trip. I normally wear Chaco sandals in the Summer and they seem to be sturdier and more appropriate footwear for this walk and then I thought they could melt too, so… Hiking boots? Those would possibly not melt, so maybe they would have been appropriate, but I’m not sure…

A strange game, the only winning move is not to play… You don’t go to Death Valley in the boiling hot summer (I myself have been in June of many years ago and it was a chillier day)

I stopped using Windows in 2008 (juggling between a mixture of Linux and Mac OS). One of the reasons, is that at that time I thought Windows was legitimately a mess.

Over time, I thought it got a bit better when seeing it on friends’s computers.

Due to laziness, Windows 11 got installed on my office computer (which I use 1% of my time) and I thought it was honestly pretty good (as in, I never thought about switching back, but it was fine to use it when necessary).

Now that they plug in ads, I’ll certainly want to switch back /s

Once Upon a time when people watched more TV, there were tons of tele marketers selling crap of all sorts (weight loss supplements, mattresses, weight gear and whatnot) and I always rolled my eyes and switched channels.

Now influencers are their evolution and for some reason managed to escaped the stigma of being tele marketers because they make edited “cool” videos that also show some fun thing.

This is very annoying, but I’m not sure what can be done, besides trying to inform friends (which lately seems to have become impossible with the rise of fake news and the empowering feeling that people “are doing their own research”)

I was scrolling down to see if anyone said this, since it’s been the case for me so far. I have to say lately I’ve seen a raise in unfriendliness (not referring towards me, but in general), but I suppose it’s inevitable.

I’m still really happy with how people interact with me and with each other, and I haven’t felt that on Reddit for a while (am referring to both pre APIcalypse and after, though I now visit Reddit rarely)

Well, I would like to think that this will get some more Redditors to become Lemmings, but I don’t have high hopes. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been a significant migration during the APIcalypse, so I don’t see that happening now.
