There are still a lot of workers needed in agriculture, but increasingly they are either undocumented migrants or on restrictive visas (like temporary foreign workers in Canada) that limit their bargaining power and let their employers exploit them with poor working conditions and rock bottom wages. This means that these workers often don’t have the means or income to participate much in the local economy beyond the bare essentials. This is actually a case of “trickle down economics” where paying workers fair, living wages would lead to healthier local economies where these workers could spend those wages and support having or starting a family.

As much as I wish he would land in jail, I doubt that will be the actual outcome. I bet the republican talking heads know it too, but they can’t resist cashing in on the fear of it to fire up their bases.

To be fair, I totally expect far right sociopathic billionaires to do this kind of evil move. Taylor Swift is not typically lumped in with them even though she should be.

I mean I’m fully aware of the hypocrisy of republicans saying they are the party of “freedom” only when freedom aligns with their ideology. It’s just fun to watch them try to backpedal and implode when you ask if they would be comfortable with a democrat making similar rules.

Just last week, Abbott ranted about a male teacher who wore a dress to some school events in the state who was driven to quit his job by online trolls. Abbott said that the teacher was “trying to normalize the concept that this type of behavior is OK” and said, “This is the type of behavior that we want to make sure we end in the state of Texas.”

I seriously want to ask conservatives in Texas why they are comfortable letting their government dictate what clothes they are allowed to wear?

I barely watch YouTube as it is. Sometimes I have to watch a tutorial or review that I can’t find information on elsewhere, but literally every time I wish it was a blog post instead.

Another thing to consider is that US citizens must pay taxes on all foreign income and investments even if they leave to live outside the US. This is why the US has made renouncing US citizenship expensive and complicated, like even after you renounce it you still have to pay US taxes for 10 more years despite losing the rest of your citizenship privileges immediately.

I’ve started using Obsidian with a kanban plugin, though any sufficient kanban style solution would work. I have a to-do column (aka backlog), an in-progress column, and a finished column. I add notes to the cards about what I did and I never delete stuff from the finished column so I can review if I need to re-open or re-do a task in the future.

Oh absolutely, but modern machine learning algorithms will be far more effective and biased. You might think it would lower prices in poorer neighborhoods, but instead it might discover they are a captive market with no nearby grocery stores and poor transit to get to a “cheaper” Wendy’s, and instead raise prices to squeeze people who have few alternatives and are already struggling. Welcome to the enshitification of fast food.

I bet their version of dynamic pricing is less “the price of a burger changes from 2pm to 6pm based on demand” and more “we let the AI slowly adjust prices across different regions over days and weeks to learn the point that extracts the maximum profit in each market”.
