The Republican National Committee has pulled a resolution to consider declaring Donald Trump the party’s “presumptive 2024 nominee” before he formally clinches the requisite number of delegates, a person familiar with the decision said Thursday.
News of the withdrawal came shortly after Trump posted on his Truth Social site that, while he “greatly” appreciated the notion, he felt, “for the sake of PARTY UNITY, that they should NOT go forward with this plan, but that I should do it the ‘Old Fashioned’ way, and finish the process off AT THE BALLOT BOX.”
The measure, according to a draft obtained Thursday by The Associated Press, had said it “declares President Trump as our presumptive 2024 nominee for the office of President of the United States and from this moment forward moves into full general election mode welcoming supporters of all candidates as valued members of Team Trump 2024.”
The withdrawal was confirmed by a person familiar with the decision who was not authorized to publicly discuss the proposal and spoke on condition of anonymity Thursday night.
Haley told them she’d make an independent run, didn’t she?
That’s my bet, too
I don’t buy it, most of her voters would jump to Trump because if you’re a Haley voter you’re too “smart” (for lack of a better term) to not realize that splitting the Republican vote just means Biden wins, and they would rather have Trump than that.
I think what happened here is Trump privately told the GOP to do this, then when they went through he turned them down so he gets to look ppwerful and like someone who wants to win a fair fight to his idiot followers
‘I can’t deal’: Haley voters signal they won’t vote for Trump against Biden
Ask yourself, do you think Republican party members are above lying to journalists and pollsters to try to force the circumstances they’d like to see? And have we ever seen significant numbers of Republican party voters stand up to Donald Trump?
I think they’re just saying this because they’re smart enough to know that Donald Trump is a loser November and they’re trying to convince other members of their party of that, but when it gets to November they’ll fall in line like they always have
Also, worth remembering that Haley has promised to endorse Trump when she drops out of the race
I’m sorry… you think Republican rank-and-file voters are smart?
Oof, okay, when you put it like that…
For real, I think the Haley segment of Republican voters are better political strategists than the Trump segment, but that’s all I’m saying. I certainly don’t think any of them are smart when it comes to policy preferences.
You lost me right there. You think they even know what a political strategy is? Heck, strategy is a 3-syllable word. They can’t even count that high. Why do you think Haley uses “Nikki” instead of “Nimarata”? Way too many syllables.
That, and I guarantee people would start calling her “nimrod”.
You mean Nimrod, the mighty hunter? Sounds like a name a republican could resurrect with a little careful thought and planning.
An independent Haley vote would give Republicans who are fed up with Trump a face saving way to vote for Biden. I know a lot of Republicans who will not vote for a Democrat, no matter what.
You mean Charles Koch?
If she has any sort of sense about her, it would damn smart to stay in as long as possible to build notoriety for herself. Positioning yourself as the Donald Trump alternative, the generational political alternative, the gender alternative, etc etc sets you up well for the future. I don’t doubt Trump will win, but to pull out super early would be a mistake.
Well I hope one of them does
Betting on Republicans to do the right thing is a surefire way to end up broke.
That’s the secret, one of them being a spoiler candidate is exactly the wrong thing for either of them to do. It’s a safe bet
