They did this specifically to screw over the UK because they were rivals but screwed themselves over in the process.

Germany in 1923 was a destitute country because the world decided that Germany was responsible for raparations to every country they affected during WWI. This destroyed their economy and ruined the lives of millions of innocent civilians, which really lead the way for Hitler and the Nazis to take power after. I don’t know what specifically is important about 1923 here, so there may be some reference I’m missing.
