  • It’s the same here in New Jersey, or at least the city I’m in. Recently a fire inspector came by the condo building I was living in & failed ~ 60% of the units because they still had the old style replaceable battery smoke detectors. Apparently going forward we are/were supposed to be using sealed battery smoke detectors & replace them entirely every ~10 years when they stop working.

EDIT: Not sure if that’s OP’s problem unless their alarm company is so cheap that they keep giving OP really old detectors to replace with.

In the northeast U.S. Zillow and their related sites (they own a few real estate sales/rentals sites) is where the majority of rental listings show up. Though keep in mind those are also markets with tons of real estate brokers doing the listings & whatnot. Plenty of owner/landlords also use those sites but I’m not too sure if it’s the same in other parts of the U.S.

Those Zillow sites also have room / roommate search listings but a lot of people tend to join local Facebook groups for that or maybe use apps for that.

  • Seems mostly dead for apt rentals / roommate wanted type stuff. I used to use it years ago but nowadays it’s mostly scam posts and no one I know would use Craigslist for finding roommates / looking for rooms. The site itself has a reputation for having shady posters so people tend to avoid it.

  • Screenshot the QR codes & save offline to a USB disk. Alternatively some people do print them but that only works for people that have printers or access to one. Same with the 2FA backup codes.

Or less ideal you can save them somewhere secure on your desktop/laptop/whatever, just keep in mind if you get hacked or get malware/whatever then it’s game over.

  • Looking specifically for men but I’m open to all opinions

Pay attention to what women are using, aside from dealing with make up the skin care routine isn’t that different.

In the shower I use a daily foaming face cleanser. Using soap is worse on facial skin (ends up causing more breakouts, etc.).

I use bar soap for the rest of my shower routine.

In the mornings and evenings I moisturize dry skin areas (mainly hands and lips).

    Before shaving I always exfoliate.

In the U.S. I tend to use Aveeno products for that stuff but you should be able to find equivalents of those things in Europe.

  • But I listened to all the “sensible” people and went for a graduate level program instead like an idiot

Oof, yeah similar situation though for me it was more around 20-21. Went to college for about 2-3 years, wasn’t doing too great with the required calculus classes & sort of dropped out. The upside was during that same time I landed a full time job in IT & was getting paid plenty, had a 401k, all that stuff.

But the “sensible” people around me (aka the boomer parents/uncles/etc. with their lifetime pensions) kept telling me to stop working & go back to school. That got into my head & eventually I quit my well paid job, burned another 2-3 years on school before realizing that just wasn’t going to work out for me. Then cashed out my 401k to pay off those school loans… those same “sensible” people didn’t tell me anything about retirement savings & I was too young & dumb to understand that stuff back then.

Nowadays I’m okay & don’t have any debt. But all that essentially meant I started over with my career later in life & am still trying to catch up with retirement savings.

  • I don’t think so? Unless something changed recently that site wasn’t even federated with anything, it was (is?) just it’s own standalone website. In the beginning the dev/owner couldn’t even decide how to display posts/conversations & changed the display format a few times.

I remember for a while the dev/owner would use throwaway Reddit accounts to spam his website every time people were discussing Reddit alternatives, like “hey you should check out this one, it’s great!” sort of spam. The spam was enough to turn me off from creating an account there… and realistically it didn’t look like it was going to gain any real traction.

This stuff about the owner going alt-right is news to me, it’s been off my radar so long I never bothered checking if it still existed.

  • You mean like a random person at your previous job? Why wouldn’t you get a reference from a coworker/manager/boss that you were friendly with during that employment? Lets be honest, if everyone at that place hated you & you have no one friendly there to give you references then you probably should avoid using anyone there as a reference.

It’s also possible I’m overthinking this, right now I work at a small business whose owner is very spiteful & always talking badly about people he dislikes (employees & otherwise). That would absolutely be the last person I would use for a professional reference if/when I leave the job, LOL. Luckily all my coworkers get along great so I’d have plenty of other references to use there.

  • That’s interesting & somewhat surprising, we are currently testing a Canon MAXIFY GX5020 and everyone in the office hates its color output. It’s in the same MegaTank family that your Canon is in.

I’m trying to figure out if maybe Canon sent us a bad printer or if these Canons just don’t do colors that well. If you have a chance can you do these two color test prints & let me know how yours does?

https://cmyktool.com/cmyk-test-print/ (download the PDF and print it)

https://printtester.com/#print-color-test-page (download the Color Test Page PDF and print it, the one with the color wheel)

What I’ve found is that our Canon does fine with the CMYK Test Print but doesn’t do as well on the Color Test. For us in the color wheel when the colors blend from Blue into Red (e.g. the dark blue / purple / dark red) the mixed colors look sort of dull and generally off. So any images with purple or around that color come out sort of darker/dull compared to our old color laser printer. I can’t really explain colors that well but you get the gist :D

When we first received the printer magenta was barely printing so all the colors were especially bad, after doing the printer maintenance functions that color at least started printing but I wonder if the printer heads are just screwed up on this one, hmm.

  • Sort of depends on what type of printer you’re aiming towards. At work we’ve been mainly using HP Laserjet (the more expensive business class types with multiple trays) & those things are workhorses, they do last a good while. I also did work for a guy whose office still runs an ancient HP Laserejet from probably 20 years ago & somehow the thing still works (old enough to still have a parallel port on it haha).

On a related note more recently I’ve been testing a Canon MegaTank color inkjet to replace our dying Lexmark color laserjet, so far everyone in the office hates the Canon.

  • The Lord of the Rings / The Hobbit movies. If I could manage it usually would head up to the theater to re-watch every 1-2 weeks.

They were all movies released in December. I still distinctly remember heading up to the IMAX in Manhattan late night after work so the movie would finish up around midnight(?). After watching these movies I'd walk out of the theater into a cold and snowy NYC. Felt a bit surreal, especially after the last 2 Hobbit movies where most of the movies were centered around cold climates.
