Question to people who block communities, how many? What's your criteria? I, uhhh, block a measly 586 communities.

My criteria is as follows:

  • nuked nearly all meme ones
  • nuked meta ones for instances outside of mine, as I find my ingerence unfair
  • nuked meta ones for countries I've no past with and no interest in making future with
  • nuked soft porn / porn ones from .world
  • nuked duplicate communities from instances which block many instances, so I get most diversity of opinions since they crosspost anyway
  • blocked AI art communities
  • generally anything related to AI, crypto and other topics I don't have any interest in
  • blocking all/near-all image and video oriented communities, because I'm here for engagement, not browsing images and most definitely not for videos

I'm very pro curating my own experience, as you may see. It's quite slow, but at least I seldom get things I don't want to check out, apart from some posts from technology.

Blocking the low quality content communities feels like an endless battle. I have been thinking for a while we need a centralised repository of links to block - similar to ad blocker lists.

i was thinking of attempting something of that sort but i quickly realized that it'd be even more useful as a generic "list of communities for/about [thing]", and people could then use that generic list both as a subscription list AND as a block list, depending on their interests

and then i swiftly gave up realizing the scale of it all so if anyone wants to run with this idea feel free to do so

You could make a community for that and have people share their block lists. I’m not sure how efficient that’d be with long block lists, as you’d need to add spaces and ! in front of every community, since copying them directly doesn’t save the linebreaks nor hyperlinks, at least for me.

I might take a look at the API and see what endpoints are used to list and add to the blocklist. It may be a fairly simple tool to put together
